GRP SERVICES

SPECIALIST grp SERVICES

Having worked for one of the most prestigious RIB building manufacturers in the UK and having built several race boats, we are very experienced in all aspects of GRP repairs and fibreglass moulding. We only use Lloyds approved materials where required. If you have suffered from damage to your hull from rocks or other submerged objects or perhaps you have sustained damage to your outboard engine cowling or hood we can repair the damage for you.

GELCOAT REPAIRS

The exterior paint or gel coat finish on boats, RIBs or yachts protects the GRP fibreglass superstructure from water ingress. Over time, if this damage is not repaired, this water could cause osmosis or delamination of the fibreglass layers. With all gel coat repairs the damaged area is prepared by feathering out, degrease and applying an epoxy filler (if painting) or a colour matched gelcoat. A final process of sanding back and polishing will provide a watertight glossy finish.

GRP REPAIRS

With more extensive damage, it is vitally important to professionally repair cracks or holes to maintain the structural integrity, failure to do so may result in injury or worse. It's also be a general requirement of your marine insurers for you to maintain your craft in a seaworthy condition, much like an MOT. Depending on the damage the process usually involves grinding out of the damaged area and applying layers of new fibreglass followed by epoxy filler or gel coat and a final sand and polish.

GRP MOULDING

When developing a new RIB range or boat model for example, there are several mouldings which will need to be designed and created, from rear engine splash well areas to inline jockey seats and locker hatches. The process involves creating a plug (which essentially looks like the final product), this plug is then moulded and the final layup within the finished mould will create the final product. It can be a lengthy process especially working on the initial plug, correct release angles and attention to detail are paramount as any imperfections in the finish will be visible on the final product.

It's not just for boats, we can also create any mould from fibreglass for almost any use, here are a few of the examples some of GRP fibreglass moulds we have created:-

  • RIB and boat consoles
  • Helm seats & jockey seat storage bases (external or internal flange)
  • Rear outboard splash well areas
  • Locker hatches
  • Instrument pods
